晿CHĒNG Where Philosophy and Wearable Art Converge

Interview with the Designer Behind 晿CHĒNG Redefining Wearable Art

Marketplace Debris (MD): It’s a pleasure to have you here today. Chëng has quickly made a name for itself with its unique blend of design and philosophy. Could you start by telling us a bit about your background and how Chëng came into existence?

Chëng Designer (CD): Thank you for having me. My journey with Chëng began with a desire to explore art beyond traditional mediums. I graduated from one of Asia’s top art schools, where I focused on both design and olfactory arts. Over time, I became increasingly interested in how abstract concepts—particularly those related to life and existence—could be expressed through wearable art. In 2022, I decided to create Chëng as a brand that would allow me to push those boundaries, blending design, art, and philosophy into something that people could experience on a deeply personal level.

MD: The name "Chëng" is intriguing and seems to carry significant meaning. Can you share what it represents and how it aligns with your brand’s philosophy?

CD: The name "Chëng" was chosen to reflect the brand’s focus on transformation and creation. It’s about the process of deconstructing and reimagining concepts, particularly the idea of life itself. Chëng is not just a brand; it’s a philosophical exploration, a space where abstract ideas are given form and made tangible through design. The name encapsulates the idea of continuous evolution and the layers of meaning that each piece of wearable art embodies.

MD: Your decision to keep your real name hidden and let your art take center stage is quite unique. What motivated that choice?

CD: I’ve always believed that art should speak for itself. By keeping my real name hidden, I hope to remove any preconceived notions or biases that people might bring to my work. It’s important to me that the focus remains on the pieces and the stories they tell, rather than on the persona behind them. This sense of mystery allows the audience to engage with Chëng’s creations on a deeper, more introspective level, letting the art be the primary narrative.

MD: Chëng is known for its intricate designs that blend abstraction with wearability. Can you walk us through your creative process and how you bring these concepts to life?

CD: My creative process begins with a concept or a philosophical question—often something related to the nature of existence, identity, or the cycles of life. From there, I start to explore how these abstract ideas can be expressed through form and texture. I use a combination of weaving, unraveling, and layering techniques to create pieces that feel both intricate and organic. The materials I choose are often symbolic; they might represent the fragility of life or the strength found in resilience. The goal is to create something that’s not just visually striking but also deeply meaningful and reflective of the wearer’s inner world.

MD: How do you hope wearers of Chëng’s designs connect with your pieces on a personal level?

CD: My hope is that each piece from Chëng serves as more than just an accessory—it becomes a vessel for personal reflection and connection. I want wearers to see themselves in the art, to find their own meanings and interpretations within the designs. Whether it’s the way a piece feels when worn or the story it tells through its form, I hope it encourages introspection and a deeper understanding of their own journey and existence.

MD: Chëng was established in 2022, but it has already made a significant impact. What do you think sets your brand apart in the world of design?

CD: I think it’s the integration of art, philosophy, and design that sets Chëng apart. We’re not just creating jewelry; we’re creating experiences that challenge the wearer to think and feel deeply. The pieces are designed to be more than just beautiful—they’re meant to provoke thought, to be lived with, and to evolve with the wearer. This commitment to creating something that goes beyond the surface, that invites the wearer into a dialogue with the art, is what I believe resonates with our audience.

MD: What’s next for Chëng? Are there any upcoming projects or collections we can look forward to?

CD: There’s always something new on the horizon at Chëng. Right now, I’m working on a collection that delves into the concept of impermanence, exploring how we can capture the fleeting moments of life in something tangible. I’m also experimenting with new materials and forms that will continue to push the boundaries of wearable art. While I can’t reveal too much just yet, I’m excited to share these new explorations with our community soon.

MD: We’re eagerly anticipating what’s to come! Finally, what message would you like to leave with those who follow Chëng?

CD: I’d like to thank everyone who has supported Chëng and embraced our vision. My hope is that through our pieces, you find not just an accessory, but a deeper connection to yourself and the world around you. Art is meant to be lived, worn, and experienced, and I’m honored that Chëng can be a part of that journey with you.

MD: Thank you for sharing your story and insights with us. We look forward to seeing how Chëng continues to evolve and inspire.

CD: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure.
