SHINSEI: Capturing Nature’s Essence Through Wearable Art

Interview with Lang Wei of SHINSEI: Merging Nature with Wearable Art

Marketplace Debris (MD): Lang Wei, it’s a pleasure to have you with us today. SHINSEI has become known for its unique approach to blending nature and art in jewelry design. Can you start by telling us about your background and how SHINSEI was born?

Lang Wei (LW): Thank you for having me! My journey with SHINSEI really began with my deep appreciation for nature and my passion for jewelry design. I graduated with a Master’s degree in Jewellery and Metal from the Royal College of Art, where I explored how to translate abstract concepts into tangible forms. After years of refining my craft, I felt inspired to create a brand that would bring the beauty and intricacy of nature into wearable art. In 2019, I established SHINSEI with the vision of capturing the essence of nature through jewelry that speaks to both the soul and the senses.

MD: The name "SHINSEI" itself is intriguing. What does it represent, and how does it reflect the ethos of your brand?

LW: SHINSEI is a Japanese word that can be translated to mean "new life" or "rebirth," which perfectly aligns with the brand’s philosophy. The name reflects the idea of giving new life to natural elements through the medium of jewelry. It also embodies the brand's commitment to reimagining the beauty of nature in a way that’s both modern and timeless. SHINSEI is about finding the extraordinary in the natural world and translating it into pieces that can be worn and cherished every day.

MD: Your designs are known for their use of natural stones and precious metals. Can you talk us through your design process and how you select your materials?

LW: My design process always begins with nature. I spend a lot of time observing the world around me—whether it’s the texture of a leaf, the contours of a stone, or the way light interacts with water. These natural elements inspire the shapes and forms in my jewelry. I choose materials that resonate with these organic qualities. For instance, I often use natural stones for their unique colors and textures, and I combine them with precious metals like sterling silver and gold to enhance their natural beauty. The materials I select are not just components; they’re integral to telling the story of each piece.

MD: SHINSEI has launched nine collections since its founding. What unifies these collections, and how do they differ from one another?

LW: Each collection under SHINSEI is unified by a deep connection to nature and a commitment to craftsmanship. However, each collection tells its own unique story and explores different facets of the natural world. For example, one collection might focus on the fluidity and movement of water, while another might draw inspiration from the rugged textures of stone. What ties them all together is the underlying philosophy of creating wearable art that connects the wearer to the beauty of nature, no matter the theme.

MD: Your work has been described as turning abstract art into wearable masterpieces. How do you approach the balance between art and functionality in your designs?

LW: It’s always a delicate balance. I see jewelry as both an artistic expression and something that must be functional and comfortable to wear. When designing, I focus on creating pieces that are visually striking yet practical. The challenge lies in ensuring that the art doesn’t overshadow the piece’s wearability. I work closely with each design, refining it until it feels like a natural extension of the body—something that can be worn effortlessly while still making a statement.

MD: How do you hope wearers of SHINSEI jewelry connect with your pieces on a personal level?

LW: My hope is that each piece of SHINSEI jewelry becomes more than just an accessory—it becomes a part of the wearer’s personal narrative. I want people to feel a deep connection to the natural world when they wear my designs, to find beauty in the simplicity and intricacy of nature. Each piece is crafted with the intention of evoking emotion and reflection, allowing wearers to carry a piece of nature’s essence with them wherever they go.

MD: SHINSEI has quickly established itself in the jewelry world. What do you think sets your brand apart from others?

LW: I believe it’s the combination of deep respect for nature and the artistic approach to jewelry design that sets SHINSEI apart. We’re not just creating jewelry; we’re creating wearable art that tells a story. Each piece is designed to be timeless, something that can be cherished for years and passed down as an heirloom. Our commitment to quality and craftsmanship is unwavering, and I think that resonates with people who are looking for something more meaningful in their jewelry.

MD: What can we expect next from SHINSEI? Are there any new collections or projects in the works?

LW: I’m always exploring new ideas and inspirations, so there are definitely some exciting projects on the horizon. We’re working on a new collection that delves even deeper into the textures and forms found in nature, with a focus on creating pieces that are both bold and intricate. I’m also exploring the use of new materials and techniques to push the boundaries of what we can achieve with our designs. I can’t reveal too much just yet, but I’m excited to share what’s coming next with our SHINSEI community.

MD: We can’t wait to see what’s next! Finally, what message would you like to leave with those who follow SHINSEI?

LW: I’d like to thank everyone who has supported SHINSEI so far. Your belief in our vision means the world to me. I hope that through our jewelry, you find a deeper connection to the beauty of nature and that each piece brings you joy and inspiration in your everyday life. Remember, art isn’t just something to be observed—it’s something to be lived and worn, and I’m honored to be a part of that experience with you.

MD: Thank you, Lang Wei, for sharing your insights and the story behind SHINSEI. We look forward to seeing the continued evolution of your brand.

LW: Thank you! It’s been a pleasure.
