Interview with Yu Qingran: The Vision Behind Before Baymen
Debris (PG): Welcome, Yu Qingran! We’re excited to dive into your creative world today. Can you kick things off by sharing a bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in design?
Yu Qingran (YQ): Thank you! It’s a pleasure to be here. I graduated from the University of the Arts London, specializing in accessories design. My journey began with a passion for marrying functionality with aesthetic appeal, and over time, I've developed a profound respect for the balance between humanity and nature. This connection profoundly influences my work and led to the inception of my brand, Before Baymen.
PG: "Before Baymen" is such a captivating name. Can you share the inspiration behind this unique brand and its significance?
YQ: Certainly! The name "Before Baymen" is deeply rooted in the tranquil and powerful imagery of coastal life, particularly the harbor. It symbolizes both a gateway to adventure and a safe haven. This duality of exploration and belonging embodies our brand philosophy. We strive to capture this essence in our designs, merging the raw beauty of nature with refined craftsmanship.
PG: Your designs are renowned for their simplicity yet impactful presence. How do you achieve this remarkable balance in your creations?
YQ: My designs draw inspiration from elemental forms such as fishing nets and shells. These seemingly simple elements possess a profound strength and beauty. I focus on their core characteristics—like the intricate knots of fishing nets and the elegant curves of shells—and distill them into clean, powerful lines. This approach not only showcases the materials' natural beauty but also conveys a sense of calm and strength.
PG: That's incredibly insightful. Can you walk us through your creative process?
YQ: My creative journey begins with immersing myself in nature, particularly by the sea. I observe the tides, collect shells, and let the environment inspire me. After gathering these experiences, I sketch my ideas, aiming to encapsulate the essence of these natural forms. From there, I experiment with various materials and techniques, typically using 925 silver as the base and enhancing it with gold and platinum plating to create depth and brightness.
PG: Your material choices are evidently deliberate. How do you decide on the materials you use for your designs?
YQ: Material selection is crucial in my design process. I believe that the right material should complement the design while enhancing its significance. For instance, 925 silver serves as an elegant and durable canvas for my work. Adding gold and platinum plating not only boosts visual appeal but also accentuates the intricate details and textures inspired by nature. This thoughtful combination creates timeless, versatile pieces
PG: It’s clear that nature plays a significant role in your work. How does this relationship influence your designs and the message you want to convey?
YQ: Nature is central to my creative vision. It continually inspires me and reminds me of the beauty found in simplicity. Through my designs, I aim to communicate a sense of tranquility and connection to nature, even amid urban chaos. The patterns and textures in my pieces reflect the calm of the sea and the harmony of natural forms. Ultimately, I hope to inspire people to appreciate the natural world and find their own sense of balance.
PG: You've achieved remarkable milestones, such as your features in "The Ones 2 Watch" and your participation in the "MY HOUSE IS AN ISLAND" exhibition. How have these experiences shaped your career?
YQ: These opportunities have been incredibly fulfilling and have allowed me to connect with a wider audience. Being featured in The Ones 2 Watch validated my design philosophy. The exhibition offered a platform to showcase my work in a new context and receive diverse feedback. Such experiences have boosted my confidence and encouraged me to continue pushing my creative boundaries.
PG: What can we expect from Before Baymen in the future? Any exciting new projects on the horizon?
YQ: I'm always exploring fresh ideas! Currently, I’m developing a new collection that delves deeper into the harbor's theme as a space for both departure and return. This collection will feature intricate designs with new materials and techniques. I’m also collaborating with fellow artists to merge different art forms with fashion. It’s an exhilarating time for Before Baymen, and I look forward to sharing these new creations soon with Debris.
PG: We can’t wait to see what’s next! Finally, do you have a message for our readers?
YQ: I encourage everyone to find beauty in simplicity and strength in nature. Life can be hectic, but taking a moment to appreciate your surroundings can bring immense peace and fulfillment. Before Baymen embodies more than just fashion; it’s about connecting with nature and finding harmony within ourselves. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I hope my designs inspire tranquility in your lives.
PG: Thank you, Yu Qingran, for sharing your insights and journey with us. We’re excited to witness the evolution of Before Baymen.
YQ: Thank you! It’s been a joy to connect.
